About Sunsuivi

Sunsuivi General Manager Ye Shu-Hui’s speech at Fo Guang University entitled “There’s A Paddy Field in Everyone’s Heart.”

Rice Mill in the Woods

In 1979, before the highway was built, Mr. Li Dong-Chao, an employee at Taiwan Power Company, decided to quit his job and returned to his home in Miaoli where he started a new chapter in his life by building the Shan Shui Me Rice Mill in the woods.

The Pioneer of Small Bagged Rice

In the beginning, the couple only had a Vespa scooter and a tricycle truck to deliver rice to the market. Yeh Shu-Hui was in charge of sales, cooking, babysitting, and accounting, allowing her husband to focus on managing the rice mill and producing high-quality rice. At the time, both of them noticed that Taiwanese rice lacked its own brand, and after being inspired by the government’s policy on increasing national production, they decided to name their rice Guo Guang. Meanwhile, they also realized that in the early years, rice came in flour sacks, and people would pour the rice into their rice tanks, which was prone to rice weevil infestation. In light of this, they believed that small bags would become the future trend in the urban areas, so they launched the first small bag rice in Taiwan in 1983, which forever changed how rice would be sold.

However, selling rice required a vendor license at the time, so the obstacle they encountered when promoting small bagged rice was the lack of sales channels. In order to put small bagged rice on store shelves, they not only had to sell rice but also help supermarkets and grocery stores apply for a vendor’s license. Why don’t you make an effort the good fortune bonanza slots. Initially, they started from Taichung County and gradually transformed the entire rice industry in Taiwan.

Official Launch of the Sunsuivi Brand

In 1989, General Manager Yeh Shu-Hui discovered by chance that the brand Guo Guang is also the name of a motor oil product. To avoid confusion, she decided to rebrand the rice. Since Yuanli is located at the foot of Huoyan Mountain and enjoys the irrigation of pollution-free water from the Daan River, the alluvial fan boasts exceptionally fertile soil. For this reason, the rice was rebranded as Sunsuivi to highlight its place of origin and premium quality.

Exquisite Rice Milling – Seizing the Initiative

Since President Li Dong-Chao studied electrical engineering and is very knowledgeable about machinery, he dedicated himself to expanding the factory’s equipment after he joined the rice milling industry. He introduced automatic rice milling and packaging machines from Japan and implemented low-temperature drying technology. By computerizing and digitizing rice milling machines, he is able to ensure the quality of the rice husking and sifting process.

Over time, the number of consumers dining out has increased as well. With sophisticated rice milling technology and quality control operations, Sunsuivi not only became the first CAS-certified rice producer in the country but also obtained numerous accreditations including TAP production traceability, CAS high-quality food, and double food safety management certification (ISO22000/HACC), making it a trusted supplier of major food factories in Taiwan. The achievements serve as a testament to Sunsuivi’s commitment to sound management.

President, Dong-Chao Li 李東朝

“We must embrace every challenge in life despite adversities; although hard work does not guarantee success, success will never be accomplished without hard work. We only strive to achieve the best possible outcome.”

He studied science and technology at a technical college, hence Mr. Li pays particular attention to the hardware during his entrepreneurial process. Advanced equipment will ensure the near-perfect quality of the rice, thus Sunsuivi’s rice must undergo countless rigorous processes and inspections to make sure consistent quality. Since the company was founded, Sunsuivi has constantly updated its facilities in a bid to refine the production flow and process with the elements of quality and organic agriculture in mind.

Sunsuivi’s superb quality has made it a firm favorite among food factories. To meet the strict demand and pace of the food factories, we must continue to make improvements and upgrades, and as a result, Sunsuivi has demonstrated superior growth rate and competitiveness compared to other producers and became the no. 1 supplier of rice in the food industry.

General Manager, Shuhui Ye 葉淑蕙

“Engendering a new rice culture with the best quality.”

“According to statistics, 1% of Taiwan’s population consumes 7-11 lunchboxes for every meal; faced with such an enormous dine out market, Uni-President’s stringent demand in quality rice is not something ordinary rice mills can cater to, but Sunsuivi has done it with flying colors.”

“The term organic not only refers to a particular food ingredient or material but a way of life, philosophy, and culture.” Consequently, promoting rice culture has been a daunting challenge, particularly concerning the promotion of organic agriculture. The reason being that the concept was not popular among the general public, coupled with the Council of Agriculture’s unclear standards on organic agriculture, it is difficult to distinguish organic products from the rest. In terms of production, since weeding is an extremely costly operation, farmers were reluctant to do engage in organic agriculture. In order to encourage farmers, we subsidized each farmer NT$30,000 and promised to purchase their rice at a much higher price than the market going rate. As a result, the farmers became more willing to engage in organic farming when they realized that the price of their rice is guaranteed.

In recent years, a new trend of organic rice cuisine has emerged, where expansions in the food market and sales channels have incentivized more farmers to practice organic production. The Organic Duck Rice is produced and milled within a dedicated facility, and traceability records offer consumers peace of mind in that the rice is 100% organic and safe.

Producing organic rice is only Sunsuivi’s first step in shaping a new rice culture. By drawing inspiration from the concept of health, we aim to expand to tangible facilities such as organic rice fields that are open to the public. In doing so, people can experience and participate in the new rice culture that combines the mind, body, and education, ultimately becoming the new benchmark for health in Taiwan.
